AC completely dead and the house is heating up?
Fast same-day AC repair available across Raleigh, Cary, Garner & Wake County. $0 service fee, upfront pricing.
When your air conditioner quits completely on a hot North Carolina day, it’s stressful — but don’t panic. A handful of quick, safe checks solve a surprising number of “dead AC” calls, and the ones they don’t solve, you’ll know to hand off to a professional fast. Here’s exactly what to do, in order.
First, a few safe DIY checks
Work through these before you call. Each one is something a homeowner can safely do without tools or opening up equipment. If any step gets your system running again, great — and it’s still worth scheduling a tune-up to find out why it quit.
1. Check your thermostat
Start with the simplest fix. Make sure it’s set to “cool” and the target temperature is set well below the current room temperature. If it runs on batteries, replace them — a dying battery is a common culprit. Confirm the display is on and responsive. Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one.
2. Look at your circuit breakers
Your AC has two breakers — one for the indoor unit and one for the outdoor unit. Check your electrical panel to see if either has tripped. You can reset a tripped breaker once. But if it trips again right away, stop — that points to an electrical fault that needs a professional, and repeated resets can be dangerous.
3. Make sure the outdoor disconnect is on
There’s a disconnect box mounted near your outdoor unit that shuts off power for service. Check that the switch hasn’t been turned off or the pull-block left out — it happens more often than you’d think, especially after lawn care or other outdoor work.
4. Check the condensate drain and float switch
Many systems have a safety float switch that shuts the AC off if the condensate drain backs up — a built-in protection against water damage. If the drain pan is full or the line is clogged, the system won’t run until it clears. You can check whether the pan is overflowing, but clearing a stubborn clog is best left to a technician.
5. Take note of what the outdoor unit is doing
Look (don’t touch) at the outdoor unit. Is the fan spinning? Do you hear the compressor humming or buzzing? Is there ice on the refrigerant lines? You don’t need to fix anything here — but these observations help a technician diagnose the problem faster when they arrive, which can shorten the visit.
When to stop and call right away
Some signs mean it’s time to stop troubleshooting and bring in a pro. Call us if you notice any of these:
- A breaker that trips again immediately after you reset it once.
- A burning smell, hot electrical odor, or any sign of scorching near the unit or panel.
- Ice on the refrigerant lines or coil — turn the system off and call, since running it can damage the compressor.
- Any buzzing, grinding, or electrical noise that’s new.
- The system is dead and someone in the home is medically vulnerable to heat — older adults, infants, or anyone with a health condition affected by temperature.
Don’t wait too long to call
If the simple checks don’t bring your system back, call for service rather than letting the house climb into the danger zone. Beyond the discomfort, a system that keeps trying to run while something is wrong can turn a smaller repair into a larger one. The sooner a technician looks at it, the better your odds of a fast, affordable fix.

What an AC repair visit involves
When our technician arrives, they perform a thorough, no-shortcuts inspection of your system to pinpoint the exact issue rather than guessing. Once they’ve identified the problem, they explain what it’ll take to fix it and map out the repair so labor is fair and transparent. They’ll also check whether any part of the job is covered under your system’s warranty, so you’re not paying for something you don’t have to. You approve the written price before work starts. Many common failures — a bad capacitor, a tripped safety, a clogged drain — are same-day fixes; bigger issues get laid out clearly so you can decide with full information.
If a repair doesn’t make sense on an aging system, we’ll tell you that too. Our guide on whether to repair or replace your AC walks through how to make that call.
