Frequently Asked Questions from Raleigh Homeowners

Is a thermostat usually the reason for no heat?

In most cases, no. The issues we commonly find include failed circuit boards, inducer motors, or systems that were not set up correctly during installation.

Do you service older homes in Raleigh?
What heating issues do you see most this time of year in Raleigh homes?

The most common problems we are responding to are no heat at all, or the system is not keeping up during extreme cold.  There are many different causes of no-heat situations, and they need to be diagnosed by an expert.  Systems not keeping up are generally heat pump systems, and also have several root causes such as: Heat Strips not working, System not set up correctly, or low refrigerant charge.

How much does HVAC repair cost in Raleigh, NC

A typical HVAC repair in Raleigh costs anywhere from $250 to $6,000, depending on what's wrong with the system. Smaller repairs like capacitors or contactors are much less expensive than major repairs involving compressors, evaporator coils, or heat exchangers. Before any work begins, we'll diagnose the issue, explain your options, and provide upfront pricing with no hidden fees. For typical price ranges, visit our HVAC Pricing Guide.

How much does it cost to replace an HVAC system in Raleigh?

Most homeowners in Raleigh can expect to invest between $8,500 and $27,000 for a new heating and cooling system. The final price depends on factors like:

  • Home size
  • System type
  • Efficiency rating
  • Ductwork requirements
  • Electrical upgrades
  • Indoor air quality options

Every installation from Dawson's Electric & Air includes code-required upgrades, equipment removal, startup, testing, and transparent upfront pricing. You can view our complete HVAC pricing guide for typical costs and what's included.

How much does an AC tune-up cost?

An air conditioning tune-up typically costs $89 to $299, depending on the service performed. Regular maintenance helps improve efficiency, reduce unexpected breakdowns, and extend the life of your equipment. Members of our Peace of Mind Membership receive scheduled HVAC maintenance along with additional savings and priority service.

Is it better to repair or replace my HVAC system?

That depends on your system's age, condition, repair history, and the cost of the repair. If your equipment is newer and the repair is cost-effective, repairing it is often the best choice. If your system is nearing the end of its lifespan or major repairs are becoming frequent, replacement may save money over time. Our technicians will explain both options so you can make the decision that's right for your home, not ours.

# HVAC System Installation Recall - Permit Compliance Issue

Responded to failed permit inspection on recently installed 90% AFUE Lennox gas split system. CO alarms were observed installed within the residence. Documented installation deficiencies with photographic evidence showing gas line connections, PVC venting configuration, and CSST routing through structural framing with improper tape application. System requires correction of CSST jacketing method to meet electrical bonding requirements before final permit approval can be obtained.

Aaron was very efficient, knowledgeable and got us back in the right direction. Apparently I had been using the wrong “merv” filter and didn’t even know it!
