Why Is My AC Making a Loud Noise? What Rattling, Buzzing, and Clicking Actually Mean

A working air conditioner makes noise — a low hum when it starts, a soft whoosh of air through the vents. That's normal. What isn't normal is when the sound changes: a sudden rattle, a buzzing that wasn't there last week, a sharp click every time the system tries to start.

These sounds are your AC trying to tell you something.

Some are minor. Some mean the system is about to fail. Here's how to read what you're hearing — and what to do about it.

Rattling

What it sounds like: A loose, shake-y sound, either from the outdoor unit, the indoor air handler, or the vents.

What's usually causing it:

  • Loose panels or screws on the outdoor condenser unit. The vibration from normal operation can work fasteners loose over time, especially on older equipment. This is the most benign cause.
  • Debris inside the outdoor unit. Sticks, leaves, and small stones can get pulled into the unit and rattle around inside the fan housing. Turn the system off and inspect the unit — do not reach inside with the system on.
  • A failing fan motor. As fan motors wear down, the blades can become unbalanced and produce a rattling or wobbling sound at startup or during operation. This one won't self-correct.
  • Loose ductwork. If the rattling seems to come from inside the walls or ceiling, expansion and contraction in the duct system is often the culprit — especially common in homes with metal ductwork.

What to do: Tighten visible fasteners on the outdoor unit and check for debris. If the rattle continues or gets worse, have a technician look at the fan motor before it becomes a full motor replacement.

Buzzing

What it sounds like: An electrical hum or vibration, usually from the outdoor unit.

What's usually causing it:

  • A failing capacitor. Capacitors give the motors a jolt of power at startup. When they start to fail, the motor can hum and buzz without fully engaging. A buzzing outdoor unit that isn't running at all is a classic capacitor symptom — and one of the most common repairs we handle in the Triangle.   • Contactor issues. The contactor is the electrical switch that tells the compressor and fan to start. A failing contactor can buzz or chatter instead of making clean contact.
  • Loose electrical connections. Vibration over years of operation can loosen wiring terminals, causing arcing and buzzing.
  • Refrigerant line vibration. Sometimes the copper refrigerant lines vibrate against the unit housing or a nearby structure. This produces a buzz but isn't a component failure.

What to do: Capacitor and contactor failures are relatively minor fixes when caught early. Ignoring a buzzing outdoor unit often leads to a burnt-out compressor — a much more expensive outcome. If the outdoor unit is buzzing and not cooling, don't keep running it. Call for AC repair.

Clicking

What it sounds like: A repeated clicking at startup, during operation, or at shutdown.

What's usually causing it:

  • Normal relay operation. A single click when the thermostat signals the system to start, and another when it shuts off, is completely normal.
  • Repeated clicking at startup that doesn't resolve. This is a red flag. The system is trying to start but can't — often because of a failing capacitor or a refrigerant pressure problem. It tries, clicks, tries again, clicks again, never engages.
  • Clicking during operation. Can indicate debris in the fan, a bent fan blade hitting the housing, or loose internal components.
  • Thermostat issues. A failing thermostat can send intermittent signals that cause clicking without a full startup cycle. Check the thermostat batteries first — it's a free fix.

What to do: One click on, one click off — ignore it. Repeated clicking at startup means the system is struggling and should be looked at before the problem escalates.

Grinding or Screeching

What it sounds like: Metal-on-metal grinding, or a high-pitched squeal or screech.

What's usually causing it:

  • Worn motor bearings. Both the indoor blower motor and the outdoor fan motor have bearings that wear down over time. Grinding is the sound of metal surfaces that should be lubricated making direct contact. This is serious — and exactly the kind of issue a technician can spot during professional AC maintenance before it causes a breakdown.
  • Blower wheel issues. The indoor blower wheel can accumulate debris or shift on its shaft, causing it to contact the housing.
  • Compressor problems. A screeching or grinding compressor is usually indicating internal mechanical failure. Compressor replacement is expensive — sometimes more than the cost of a new system depending on system age.

What to do: Turn the system off and call for service. Running a system with grinding or screeching bearings accelerates the damage significantly and can turn a motor replacement into a full unit failure.

Banging or Clanking

What it sounds like: A heavy thud or bang, often at startup.

What's usually causing it:

  • A loose or broken component inside the compressor. Banging from the outdoor unit at startup often indicates a loose piston pin, connecting rod, or crankshaft. This is compressor damage territory.
  • Broken blower components. A cracked or detached blower blade can cause significant banging from the air handler.

What to do: Turn the system off immediately. A banging compressor almost always means it's at or near failure. Running it further typically converts a potentially expensive repair into a certain replacement.

High-Pitched Whistling or Hissing

What it sounds like: A whistle or hiss from the vents, the air handler, or the refrigerant lines.

What's usually causing it:

  • Air filter restriction. A dirty or undersized filter creates a pressure differential that causes whistling at the return vent. Check your filter first — this is a free fix.
  • Duct leaks. Air forced through gaps in ductwork creates a whistle. This also wastes energy and reduces cooling capacity.
  • Refrigerant leak. A hissing sound from the refrigerant lines or coils indicates escaping refrigerant. Refrigerant is a regulated substance under EPA Section 608 and can only be handled by a licensed technician. Running a system with a refrigerant leak will damage the compressor.

What to do: Replace the filter first. If the whistling persists, have the ducts and refrigerant lines inspected.
