Trusted Electrical Services in Cary

An electrical system ages the same way the house around it does, and in Cary that means a lot of homes are running panels and wiring that were sized for how families lived in the 1980s and 90s, not for today. A downtown 27511 ranch or an early-90s Lochmere two-story was wired before anyone had an EV in the driveway, a heat pump conversion in the plans, or a home office running three monitors and a space heater off one circuit.

Since 2005, Dawson's Electric has provided Cary homeowners with reliable, code-compliant electrical work. As a licensed electrical contractor working across Cary, most of what we do here traces back to that gap between what these homes were built to carry and what their owners now ask of them.

Our Promise: "Your Peace of Mind is Our Priority." We arrive on time, treat your home with respect, and give you exact, upfront pricing before any work begins.

How do I know if my Cary home needs a panel upgrade?

A few clear signs point to it. If your panel is full with no open slots and you want to add a circuit, if breakers trip regularly under normal use, if you're planning an EV charger, hot tub, kitchen remodel, or a switch from gas to electric heat, or if the panel is an older 100-amp service in a home that now runs modern loads, it's likely time. Many established Cary homes were built with service that was perfectly adequate then and is stretched thin now. We can evaluate the panel and tell you whether an upgrade is genuinely needed or whether your current service has room to spare, without pushing you toward work you don't need.

Can I install an EV charger on my existing panel, or do I need an upgrade first?

It depends entirely on your panel's available capacity, and that's the first thing we check. Some Cary homes, especially those with a newer 200-amp service, have room to add a Level 2 charger circuit directly. Older homes with a 100-amp panel that's already near capacity usually need a service upgrade first, because forcing a 240-volt charger onto a panel that can't support it is both a code problem and a safety problem. We evaluate the panel, tell you honestly which situation you're in, and can handle the charger and any needed panel work as one coordinated job.

My older Cary home has two-prong outlets. Is that a problem?

It's worth addressing. Two-prong outlets are ungrounded, which means they don't offer the shock and surge protection that modern grounded outlets do, and they can't safely power many of today's electronics. In older Cary ranches and split-levels, this is common. The right fix depends on what's behind the wall; sometimes a proper ground can be run, and in other cases GFCI protection is the code-compliant solution for an ungrounded circuit. We'll assess the actual wiring rather than assume, and give you a straight answer on what each option involves.

Is whole-home surge protection actually worth it in the Triangle?

For most Cary homes, yes. The Triangle gets frequent summer thunderstorms, and a single nearby strike or a utility surge can destroy expensive equipment in an instant: HVAC control boards, appliances, computers, and smart-home gear. Whole-home surge protection installed at the panel costs a fraction of what it protects and stops the damage before it reaches your devices. In homes with overhead service and a mature tree canopy, which describes much of established Cary, it's one of the smartest low-cost upgrades available.

Do you pull permits for electrical work in Cary?

Yes, for work that requires it. Panel upgrades, new circuits, service changes, and similar work should be permitted and inspected through the Town of Cary, and as a licensed electrical contractor, we handle that properly. It matters more than people think; permitted, inspected work protects you at resale and confirms the job meets current code. If anyone offers to do panel or service work "without the hassle of a permit," that's a reason to be cautious, not to save money.

How much does it cost to hire an electrician in Cary, NC?

The cost of hiring an electrician in Cary depends on the type of work being performed. Simple electrical repairs and troubleshooting are often much less expensive than larger projects like electrical panel upgrades, whole-home rewiring, or generator installations. At Dawson's Electric & Air, we provide upfront pricing before any work begins, so you'll know exactly what to expect with no hidden fees. Whether you need a minor repair or a major electrical upgrade, our licensed electricians will explain your options and help you choose the best solution for your home.

How much does it cost to replace an electrical panel in Cary?

Most electrical panel replacements cost between $2,000 and $6,500+, depending on the size of your home's electrical service, grounding requirements, permit requirements, and whether additional code upgrades are needed. Many Cary homeowners upgrade to a 200-amp electrical panel when adding an EV charger, finishing a bonus room, installing a hot tub, or replacing an older panel that no longer meets their family's electrical needs.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home in Cary?

The cost to install a Level 2 EV charger typically ranges from $800 to $2,500+, depending on the charger location, wiring distance, your home's electrical panel capacity, and whether a panel upgrade is needed. Our licensed electricians install home EV charging stations for all major electric vehicle brands and will inspect your electrical system to ensure it can safely support your new charger. You'll receive a detailed estimate with upfront pricing before installation begins.

Why are so many Cary homeowners upgrading their electrical panels?

Many homes throughout Cary were built before today's electrical demands became common. Modern households often have electric vehicles, larger HVAC systems, home offices, backup generators, smart home technology, and additional appliances that place greater demands on the electrical system. If your breakers trip frequently, lights flicker, or you're planning a home renovation, an electrical panel upgrade can improve both safety and reliability. Our licensed electricians can evaluate your system and recommend the right solution based on your home's current and future electrical needs.

How much does it cost to install a whole-home generator in Cary?

A whole-home standby generator typically costs between $12,000 and $20,000+, depending on the size of your home, the generator capacity, fuel source, electrical upgrades, and installation requirements. A professionally installed generator can automatically restore power during an outage, keeping your lights, HVAC system, refrigerator, and other essential appliances running. Our electricians will evaluate your home's electrical system and recommend the right generator for your needs while providing upfront pricing before any work begins.

How much does it cost to install recessed lighting in Cary, NC?

The cost to install recessed lighting typically ranges from $250 to $500 per light, depending on the ceiling type, accessibility, wiring requirements, and whether new switches or dimmers are being installed. Recessed lighting is a popular upgrade for kitchens, living rooms, home offices, and finished basements because it provides clean, modern lighting while improving the look and functionality of your space. Our licensed electricians will provide a detailed estimate and upfront pricing before work begins.

How much does it cost to install outdoor lighting in Cary?

Outdoor lighting projects typically range from $300 to $3,500+, depending on the number of fixtures, the type of lighting, and the complexity of the installation. We install landscape lighting, pathway lighting, security lighting, flood lights, and accent lighting to help improve your home's curb appeal, safety, and security. Whether you're lighting a front walkway or an entire backyard, we'll design a solution that fits your home and budget.

Electrical Panel Upgrades & Repairs

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's power distribution. Many older Cary homes were built with 100-amp or 150-amp panels that simply cannot handle today’s electrical demands, such as heat pumps, hot tubs, induction stoves, and electric vehicle chargers.

  • 200+ Amp Panel Heavy-Ups: Expand your power capacity to accommodate modern appliances without tripping main breakers.

  • Breaker Repairs & Arc-Fault Upgrades: Fix hot breakers, buzzing panels, or outdated fuse boxes.

  • Code Compliance: Bring older wiring setups up to current National Electrical Code (NEC) safety standards.

Wiring, Rewiring, and Older-Home Issues

Some of Cary's older ranches and split-levels carry the wiring quirks of their era: ungrounded two-prong outlets, aging branch circuits, and connections that have loosened over 30-plus years.

We handle wiring and rewiring to bring older circuits up to a safe, modern standard, whether that's grounding out an old outlet run, adding dedicated circuits for a modern kitchen, or tracing down the intermittent fault that a decades-old connection is causing.

If your home predates modern wiring practices, we'll tell you honestly what needs attention now versus what can wait.

Whole-Home Surge Protection

The Raleigh area experiences severe summer thunderstorms and power grid fluctuations. Standard surge strips only protect the items plugged directly into them, leaving your major appliances, HVAC systems, and smart home tech vulnerable.

  • Meter & Panel Surges: We install whole-home surge arrestors directly at your main breaker panel to suppress high-voltage spikes before they enter your living space.

  • Equipment Defense: Protect thousands of dollars in refrigeration, heating equipment, entertainment systems, and computers from lightning strikes and grid surges.

Home EV Charger Installation

As electric vehicles become the norm across Wake County, having a fast, reliable Level 2 charger at home is essential.

  • Tesla Authorized Installer: Dawson's is a certified installer for Tesla Wall Connectors as well as universal Level 2 chargers (Rivian, Ford Charge Station Pro, ChargePoint, and more).

  • Load Calculations: We perform a complete load calculation on your home’s panel before installation to ensure your system safely handles the continuous draw.

Outlets, Switches, and Lighting

The everyday work that makes an older home livable and safe: adding outlets where a 90s floor plan never put enough, swapping worn or unsafe switches, installing GFCI protection in kitchens, baths, and garages where it's now required, and upgrading indoor and outdoor lighting.

These are the calls that quietly bring a Cary home into the present, and they're a big share of what we do day to day.

Whole Home Generators

When a summer storm or winter ice event takes the grid down, a standby generator keeps the essentials running: heat, cooling, refrigeration, and the well pump for homes on the western, more rural edge of Cary.

We size and install whole-home and partial-load generators, including the electrical and panel work that ties them in correctly.

The Dawson’s Difference: Solutions Other Electricians Miss

Most electrical contractors only look at wires and breakers. At Dawson’s, we take a broader view of your entire home system to solve complex problems faster:

1. Integrated Electrical + HVAC Expertise

When an AC unit stops working or trips a breaker, traditional electricians might blame the HVAC unit, while HVAC techs blame the electrical panel. Because Dawson’s specializes in both Electrical and Air Conditioning in Cary, our technicians diagnose the root cause immediately, saving you the hassle of hiring two separate companies.

2. Upfront, Flat-Rate Pricing

We never bill by the hour or leave you guessing about final costs. After inspecting the job, your electrician explains your options and gives you a clear, fixed price. You approve the quote before we turn a single screw.

3. Complete Permit & Utility Handling

Adding power to a detached garage, workshop, or outdoor living space? Dawson’s manages the entire permitting and inspection process with Wake County and the Town of Cary so your project is 100% legal, safe, and hassle-free.

4. The Peace of Mind Club

Our preventative maintenance program keeps your home running safely year-round:

Responded to service call regarding third-floor bedroom circuit breaker that would not reset following water damage repairs and ceiling restoration work. Upon arrival, inspected main electrical panel in 2007 construction home and located affected 15-amp circuit breaker that had been in off position for approximately one month during water remediation. Previous contractor reported sparking when attempting to reset breaker after completing ceiling fan reinstallation and drywall repairs.

Performed visual inspection of electrical panel revealing significant insect debris accumulation within breaker compartment and around circuit connections, indicating potential compromised environmental sealing. Examined breaker in question and surrounding circuits for signs of water intrusion, corrosion, or heat damage that could explain sparking incident. Panel contained mix of standard breakers and AFCI/GFCI combination breakers with test buttons, all manufactured by Eaton.

A new dining room light fixture required an electrician. On a neighbor’s recommendation we called Dawson electric. Good choice. Bryant arrived on time very personable checked out the work gave us a price. And went about his business. A bit tricky he had to move the box 9 inches to center. The light no problem. While he was there he corrected some mistakes by others and now everything works. He recommended a surge protector which we purchased and he installed. Prompt, efficient and knowledgeable Would not hesitate to recommend.

We had an excellent experience with Curtis Edens from Dawson's Electric & Air. Our A/C units stopped working due to a damaged breaker caused by a loose electrical connection. Curtis quickly identified the root cause, explained the issue clearly, replaced the damaged breaker, repaired the affected wiring, and restored everything safely and efficiently. What really stood out was his thoroughness. He took the time to inspect several other electrical concerns throughout our home and identified loose backstabbed wiring connections and failing switches that could have caused future problems. He patiently explained what he found, answered all our questions, and provided practical recommendations to improve the safety and reliability of our electrical system. Curtis is knowledgeable, professional, honest, and detail-oriented. We never felt rushed or pressuredjust well-informed and confident that the work was done right. We highly recommend Dawson's Electric & Air, and will not hesitate to call them again for future electrical needs. We are grateful for the excellent service and the peace of mind that comes from knowing the work was done correctly and safely.
